How Solar Panels Work

Learn About Solar Panels for a Better World

Solar panels are pieces of solar power systems that collect sunlight and convert it into electricity. The homes that have solar power, you will usually see the solar panels mounted on top of the roofs of those houses.

Solar cells

They are the main components that have been laid side by side on a solar panel. These solar cells are all connected to each other into a photovoltaic module, which is called solar panels. Electricity is generated through the photovoltaic effect that occurs when the sunlight hits the solar cells. The origins of this device can be traced to the year 1839 as E.Becqureel discovered this effect. Not many applications could be made of that discovery then, but in 1946 when R. Ohl invented the solar cell it came in very handy.

Today there are dozens of technology in the manufacture of solar cells. Silicon is the most widely used material. As silicon is also used by the semi-conductor industry, both semi-conductor and solar cells industries compete for silicon. But as thin film amorphous technologies have been turning out more efficient solar cells, other materials, like gallium arsenide, copper indium diselenide and cadmium telluride, have become significant.

Wafer, bulk, and silicon cells are all the same thing and are capturing 93% of the current market and with thin-film cells having 7% of the market.

Efficiency is an important factor in solar cells, especially for systems when space is a premium. It also determines the payback period, which is around 10 years for the most efficient panels in the market. Monocrystalline and polycrystalline silicon cells have efficiencies from 8% to 18%; amorphous cells, from 4% to 8%.

Solar panels

Just as any other electrical device would have a voltage rating, so to do solar panels. Groups of solar cells are interconnected to each other to make up a powerful and practical output of current, power, and voltage. There are a few connection options you can implement to accomplish this task or make it run more efficiently. The cells that are grouped together into photovoltaic modules are what we call solar panels.

In actual systems, to achieve large power output, solar panels are interconnected into arrays.

You can charge your batteries without a charge regulator by connecting 30-32 solar cells together with 15-16 volts. You can use this sort of panel for a small system where not much power is required for example; running an electric fence or even charging up a battery will do this. For somewhat of a bigger system you are going to need 33-34 solar cells interconnected producing 16.5-17 volts. These types of cells and set ups work great in places with a lot of sun exposure.

You can basically lump solar panels into two main categories. They are concentrating and non- concentrating. Concentrating is mainly used to absorb direct sunlight and works great in that aspect. Non-concentrating works well with absorbing reflected sunlight but can accomplish both tasks.

Commercial solar panels are available for purchase that can be in 5 watts to about 230 watts. Most of the home solar systems out there will actually prefer a higher wattage solar panel. You can even find cheap solar panel manufactures online that have wattages of 40 to 230 watts. The prices will vary of course depending on the wattage and materials that it has. You can find a 72$ 60 watt solar panel, and a $666 224 watt unit for sale. The prices of the solar panels will be evaluated by dollar per watt.
